The Beauty of Nature :)

I love autumn.  It's my favourite season, right from the smell in the air first thing on mid-August mornings, through to dank and chilly late November.  As today is particularly lush, I decided to get away from the laptop and go for a walk over the park.  At last ~ no more summer clothes, time to wear my over-the-knee boots and a jacket again!

Under the trees, the view as I looked up was so gorgeous that I just had to lie down amongst the fallen leaves and twigs, and look up at it for ten minutes or so.  One woman came over and asked me if I was alright.  I said yes, I was just enjoying the beauty of nature.  She gave me a half smile, half weird look, and went back to her phone.

(I didn't have a camera with me and don't possess a smartphone, so these are not my pictures, btw).

On the way home I passed a garden with a lavender bush that smelled wonderful as I walked past.  I broke a tiny sprig off and put it behind my ear, and could smell it all the way home 😌 (where I discovered that the washing line had broken, and my washing was all over the garden.  Ah well).

Note Sept 23: re the phone thing, on the Metro yesterday my companion and I looked around and every single person apart from one lady of around 70 (and us) was staring at their phones.  Reminded us of Nosedive, from the Charlie Brooker Black Mirror series, in which one's whole life depends on one's star rating....

  1. Autumn is my favourite season too. The smells, the colours, it's wonderful. I'm so glad it's finally arrived!

  2. I love autumn, and spring and summer - it's just winter I struggle with. But even then I don't blott it out by walking round glued to my phone!

    1. Yep.... I saw a great photo the other day entitled The Walking Dead. A crowd of 20-somethings walking through a beautiful park, ALL of them glued to those wretched things!

  3. I totally love Autumn too, gorgeous days and decent temperatures that allow you to put on a decent amount of clothing - utter bliss, because I like to be covered up :-)

    1. Yes, after a certain age I feel we all look better with more clothes on, not less!!

  4. My day was a bit like that, the modern world tested me, but nature soothed me. I don't mind autumn until the temperature drops, but I prefer spring (for me, it is full of hope and energy) and summer (I dream of being warm and relaxed).

  5. I'm a spring person myself (everything starting, promise of better weather/growth etc) but I hear what you're saying (!) I love the way you appreciated it all to the fullest. And I understand what you mean about autumn in the sense that the clothes are better!

    1. It's the boots. Gotta wear the boots. And I want to wear my lovely big black cape thing with the furry collar!

  6. Hi Terry - it really is essential to remember nature and take it all in - my phone stays home most of the time ... sometimes I want the camera - but oh well missed that photo. Oh gosh sorry about the washing - the wind has been quite strong ... cheers and all the best with your writing - Hilary

  7. I love the softness of autumnal light and the promise of fun times to come - Halloween, Guy Fawkes, Christmas. Darker evening also make the perfect excuse for reading! : )

    1. I detest Christmas, but love those smoky November nights, Rae! And yes - nothing like being snuggled up with a new book when it's cold outside :)

  8. I don't think I've ever have a favourite time of year: Spring when everything is coming to life is wonderful, Summer has long lazy days (hopefully!)Autumn, the colours are beautiful and inspiring to paint. Winter - the perfect excuse to stay in and write. Mind you, I'm just glad to be here, whatever the season. :)

    1. It's only summer I don't like, J. Can't stand being hot!

  9. Isn't it funny how people used to take the time to just watch nature and now it's deemed a bit strange? So sad! That poor lady was missing out. Autumn is my absolute favorite. Summer is ending (which I also love) but it's cooler and halloween is right around the corner!

    Sorry about your wash!

  10. The colours in autumn are matchless, I agree, TT, but autumn makes me sad because it's the prelude to wnter, which I hate. Roll on spring! I love that you lay down to look up at the trees! I would have joined you...and rolled in the leaves! It's sad that people are so glued to their phones they don't see the world around them, isn't it? I hope your washing didn't get too yukky!

    1. Very much so, V. By the time we're dead and gone, I wonder if anyone will ever notice anything at all, if it doesn't come on a screen, with 'likes'!!

  11. I love Autumn - the colours and the cooler weather (although we haven’t had any hot weather this year anyway!) Unfortunately the seasons as such don’t seem so defined anymore but looking at nature, yes! I wouldn’t have thought it odd to see you looking up through the trees :-)

    1. I know you wouldn't ;)

As for the lack of definition, I wish there were still proper winters, most of all! But I love that autumn can now start in August :)

  12. Yup me too; I'm definitely an autumn girl! The colours, the smells the general feeling of autumn are all absolutely my cup of tea, despite being born in March.

  13. I'm another Autumn fan! I was so annoyed at listening to my phone ping, pong, and bleep that I switched it off and went to Kenilworth Castle. Sitting under a beautiful big tree surrounded by history and nature was just what I needed. p.s: Terry, you would LOVE Kenilworth Castle for its Tudor links.

    1. Oh, that sounds wonderful! Yes, I am sure I would - didn't Robert Dudley have it at some point? Also love Warwick, not been there for ages.

(ps, I stopped all mobile notifications long ago...)

  14. I sat on the train yesterday next to an elderly chap reading an H.E. Bates book. You know, a book, with pages and a picture on the cover. I don't mind Kindles, of course, but when I see people looking at their phones the whole time, I seriously wonder what they're doing. I find it helpful to see if I've received a client email while I'm on the train, but other than that, I really don't understand what they're doing that's so fascinating for so long.
